Volunteer organizations, whether it be your local Kiwanis Club, your place of worship, and yes, the Executive Board of NYSSO are all facing the same struggles: MEMBER INVOLVEMENT!!! I have personal experience with all three of these organizations, and in each, it is a small group of individuals who generously give of their time and talents in service, while the vast majority are just “too busy” to help out. Without these volunteers, these organizations most likely will fail, and this is the main reason they continue to serve. On the NYSSO Executive Board, there are those, including myself, who have been District representatives for quite a while, are getting “Long in the Tooth”, and are patiently waiting to “pass the baton”.
In order for NYSSO to continue to be an effective organization, there needs to be more involvement from its membership, especially those who are younger. The saying: “Many hands make light work” truly does apply here. NYSSO’s goal is to positively impact how New York State orthodontists practice now and in the future. It needs new ideas and energy in order to properly navigate the challenges that lie ahead for our profession.
There are currently a concerning number of unfilled positions for the Executive Board of NYSSO. This means that if you practice in one of these Districts, you have NO representation. This also makes it increasingly difficult for the Executive Board, since a quorum is needed to properly conduct business on behalf of the membership. PLEASE give serious consideration to getting involved. If you are interested, please contact NYSSO at nyssoinfo@gmail.com.
