Dear Constituents of the New York State Society of Orthodontists,
As our current President, it is my pleasure to write a few words about the state of our society – as we find it now in August 2024.
First, I would like to start by thanking our immediate past president, Dr. Yanique Le-Cadre for the impactful work she accomplished during her presidency. We are a much more united society, more informed, and with greater strength.
Since 2023, we have forged a strong bond with our constituent association, Northeastern Society of Orthodontists (NESO), which ensures that New York, one of their most active components, is well represented at all levels of organized orthodontics. Together with NESO and NYSDA, NYSSO is working hard to bring to the foreground discussion on dental assistant shortages, expanded function assistance, the evolution of DSO’s and what that means, pedo-ortho offices in NY and how they are evolving, and reassessing the definition of a handicapping malocclusion. These are issues affecting all practicing orthodontists in New York.
As our society grows in number and strength, we also wish to expand in all levels of representation, namely our youngest, most impressionable and most energetic members, the NY orthodontic residents. As a society, we are working hard to encourage more and more residencies to learn about and interact with members of NYSSO. We do this through our annual “Rave in the Cave” event, set to unite all our NY residencies. This year, the “Rave” took place in Brooklyn and had a large number of residents showing up to mingle, dance and talk…Orthodontics!
Another successful event was our NYSSO Annual Meeting on April 10th 2024 at NYU College of Dentistry, where Dr. Ilya Lipkin spoke to us about how transverse corrections can and maybe even should be performed on non-growing individuals with palatal sutures that are mostly fused. The session was a great success with many attending and much discussion at the end. When a topic provokes discussion, it is clear we have hit the “nail on the head”!
Our board members have been working tirelessly to address and resolve board decisions that will impact the future of our organization and the profession in our state. For this I would like to thank them for committing the time and the dedication for this position. I would also like to encourage any one of our members wishing to become more active in how orthodontics is practiced in NY, to reach out to me or Kristin Dunn, and we can inform you on how to become more active in NYSSO as a board member.
I would like to personally thank, Kristin Dunn, the NESO Executive Director, who has been a guiding light and unifying agent between NESO and NYSSO. She has assisted us in all of the above endeavors and is the person that makes sure all of our decisions become manifest.
Finally, much gratitude to all the NYSSO board members, for their hard work and dedication for their position. Ken Cooperman, Yanique Le-Cadre, Leon Klempner, Marlin Salmon, Andrew Arcuri, Boris Arbitman, Vic Grazina, Yon Lai, Mike Malsch, Deborah New, and a very special thank you to Eric Ploumis, for his commitment to the success of the “Rave in the Cave” and the Annual Meeting.
Enjoy the end of the summer and a wonderful fall.
Joana Forsea
President, NYSSO
