NYSSO sponsored a successful biennial CE meeting at NYU College of Dentistry on April 10, 2024.  It featured Dr. Ilya Lipkin and he lectured about predictable skeletal non-surgical expansion in non-growing patients using the latest 3-D techniques and technologies.

Executive Committee Update:  NYSSO past presidents, Yanique Le-Cadre and Marlin Salmon, agreed to join the Executive Committee to help address any issues before the NYSSO board meetings take place and evaluate any financial implications they may have.

NYSSO is one of nine regional components that make up NESO.  Over the past few years, NYSSO has benefited tremendously from the assistance and guidance of the Executive Director of NESO, Kristin Dunn.  She has been a great asset for helping with the operation of NYSSO, thereby making it a more effective component of NESO. The NYSSO board is very appreciative of all she has done to help us.

The board discussed the importance of the pediatric dentistry – orthodontic relationships in private practice.  The AAO and AAPD are planning a joint meeting in Florida in January 2025.  The board is considering that this joint pedo-ortho connection be a potential subject for our next biennial CE meeting in 2026.

The board also discussed the changes that are occurring with the job opportunities that are available for graduating orthodontic residents.  Currently, the primary source for their employment are the Dental Service Organizations (DSOs). NYSSO could be a valuable resource to assist these new orthodontists with the challenges they may encounter along the way.

An extremely important topic that was discussed is the growing number of unfilled positions for the Executive Board of NYSSO.  NYSSO is made up of the same 13 local dental societies as NYSDA.  The bylaws state that each of these local dental societies is represented, on the Executive Board, by at least one orthodontist who is a member of the AAO and is in good standing in the NYSDA.  Currently there are multiple societies which lack representation.  This is making it more and more difficult for NYSSO to operate- a quorum is required to have effective meetings and conduct business to benefit the orthodontists in New York State.  Please seriously consider offering your time and talents to represent your local dental society on the Executive Board.  In order for NYSSO to stay relevant as an organization, it is important to have new ideas and energy, especially from its younger members.  If you are interested, please contact NYSSO at nyssoinfo@gmail.com.

NYSSO will be having its annual component meeting at the NESO Annual Meeting in Hartford, Connecticut on Friday, November 8, 2024.  Members are encouraged to attend, meet the Executive Board members who represent them, and voice any questions or concerns they may have.  New York State orthodontic residents are encouraged to attend.
